PERUGIA CONFIRMS ITSELF AS ATP CHALLENGER 125

The Perugia Challenger is approaching its tenth edition. After nine successful editions, the tournament is confirmed as a 125, bringing champions with an increasingly higher ranking to Perugia.

The roll of honor of the tournament, which has become an unmissable event for the city of Perugia, has seen names of great prestige: the winner of the first edition, the Spaniard Carreno Busta, reached the top of the world rankings, occupying the position no. 10 in the world. In 2023, champions such as Dominic Thiem (best ranking no. 3) and Fabian Marozsan, currently number 59 in the world and famous for his historic victory against Carlos Alcaraz at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, took to the field. In 2024, the winner Luciano Darderi reached the TOP 40 thanks to his victory in the Perugia Challenger. Together with him, champions such as Fabio Fognini, Laslo Djere and Borna Coric inflamed the public in an edition to remember.

The latest editions of the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Perugia have had the privilege of having the presence of icons of Italian tennis such as Sergio Palmieri (director of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the Next Gen ATP Finals) and Corrado Barazzutti (Captain of the Davis Cup and technical supervisor of the Tennis Club Perugia), together with authentic champions of the international circuit such as Simone Bolelli (Italian champion former n.36), Marcel Granollers (best ranking n.19), Stefanos Tsitsipas (under 21 talent and winner of the Next Gen ATP finals in 2018. Current n.10 of the ATP ranking). Competing in the fourth edition were unique champions such as Pablo Andujar (former number 32) and Nicolas Almagro (former number 9 in the world). The victory of the young Next Gen prodigy Ulises Blanch, nicknamed “the panther of Puerto Rico”, gave a huge audience an unparalleled show, in the unique atmosphere of the evening session.

The fifth edition will remain in the memory for its Entry List, much more similar to an ATP 250 tournament. Among the champions who have set the Tennis Club Perugia courts alight are Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Salvatore Caruso, Damir Dzumhur, Paolo Lorenzi, Thomaz Bellucci (formerly no. 21), Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (formerly no. 23) and the winner Federico Delbonis. In addition to the great champions, the new Italian talents Giulio Zeppieri and Lorenzo Musetti, no. 1 in the world under 18 and winner of the Australian Open Junior, also took to the field.

Over the years, Perugia has hosted the Italian team that won the 2023 and 2024 Davis Cup: Simone Bolelli, Lorenzo Sonego, Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Arnaldi and captain Volandri, first as a player, then as a coach.

The world of sport, as happened at Wimbledon during the third edition, renames the Perugia tournament as “a luxury Challenger” for the prestige and level of the participating players.

Every year the tournament guarantees an incredible show in terms of participating players and public.

Perugia is preparing to celebrate the milestone of the tenth edition.
